My next scan is coming up...
Ah, yes wonder when the "scanxiety" will kick in - it hasn't yet - thank goodness! I haven't really had to worry about one yet, so this will be new territory for me. I can already feel my chest start to tighten just thinking about it. PRAYERS PLEASE!!!!!! I need you all to pray for:
1. That the scar tissue is shrinking
2. That this beast never, ever returns
3. That my hair grows faster
OK, maybe not #3 - but this hair thing is starting to really bug me! It's growing super fast, just not fast enough for me! It's a little over 2 inches long now - keep in mind that I still have "old" hair, and this new hair is growing in like crazy. It sticks straight up on top of my head, really down my part line. Some of it pokes through the old hair! I can't do a thing with it. My new name for it is my "quarter mullet" since I have short and long hair. HA!
I have been feeling like my old self these past few weeks. I thought it would take me days to get over this last beach trip because I didn't sleep that much, but I was fine by Tuesday! I am impressed with how fast I have rebounded. I have been working out 3 times a week trying to get my self back into shape. I can tell it's working. I couldn't take a deep breath for a while after chemo, but it's definitely getting better. I just went to mush sitting on the couch for 6 months - and the steroids I was on made me eat everything in sight. I have never experienced hunger like that before! I put on about 6 pounds, which isn't that much - but for me it is. I have never gained weight, and some things don't fit like they used to. I have read that weight gained during chemo is a beast to get off, but eventually it does just fall off. Some others on my lymphoma forum packed on 50+ pounds, so I guess I did pretty good.
Anyways, just thought I would let you all know about the next scan, PLEASE pray for me.
Hope all of you are doing well and enjoying the beginning of summer!
Love to all,
Kerri
Mom and Dad's Anni and Charleston Trip!
Congratulations!
I love yall and hope you have a wonderful day!
This past weekend I went on a trip to Charleston with 10 of my best girl friends - it was SO MUCH FUN! We stayed at Wild Dunes in Charleston, SC and the weather was absolutely beautiful. We had great company and awesome food. It was something I had been looking forward to for a long time. We are already planning one for next year because we all LOVED hanging out all weekend. Can't wait ladies!

3 Years Ago Today...
Who could have ever predicted what would happen to us 2 and a half years later? As devastating as it seemed at the time, my cancer diagnosis has changed the way we treat each other, for the better. I know it was hard on Ben, probably harder on him that it was on me. He was the one who had to hold it all together, he was my "rock" and the one I could depend on every single day. When someone never lets you down, you find yourself deeply connected to that person - and that is Ben, he has never once let me down. He is the only one who saw me on my bad days, and did everything he could to make it all better. He had to watch me suffer, and if the roles were reversed I'm not sure I could do that. He was forced to take another job right when I was diagnosed, and that was not easy. The job was still with Enterprise, but learning a new job when your wife was just diagnosed with cancer was just the icing on the cake. The fall/winter of 2008 totally sucked for us. But, we got through it - and with God's grace we can get through anything. With family and friends by our side, we can get through anything. Where would I be today without my rock? I'm not sure. But, thank you Lord for giving me a husband that can handle the roughest of times.
Ben, thank you for always being there for me. You have never, ever failed me. You lift my spirits in ways that no one else can. You always know exactly what to say to make me feel better. Our wedding song was "Love Will Keep Us Alive" by The Eagles - now isn't that the truth? Yes it will, love will keep us alive - now and always. Thank you for being the best husband EVER and I love you!
Happy 3rd Anniversary sweetheart!
Love always,
Kerri
PS...Ben is at home sick today, poor thing! Yall say a prayer for him!
Pray for this little boy...
This is so awful...
A 13-year old Minnesota boy was diagnosed with Hodgkin's back in January. His family doesn't believe in modern medicine, and declined treatment for him. Now the court system is involved, and I hope they can do something for him!
The boy's mother has fled with him after a court-ordered x-ray showed his tumor had grown in size this week. They have been trying to treat him with "natural" remedies. These people are obviously completely crazy, and it's just not fair that the boy has to suffer through this. It's not his fault his parents have gone off the deep end.
So sad!

The Ultimate Super Food - Blueberries
The latest news comes from a study out of Ohio State University finding that blueberries may shrink blood vessel tumors in babies while doubling survival rates. The research team fed blueberry extract to mice that had tumors. The mice receiving the extract lived twice as long as those mice that had blood vessel tumors but didn't take the extract. Also, the tumors in the blueberry mice were 60 percent smaller than those in the control group.
This finding is significant for several reasons. First, blood vessel tumors are the most common tumors among young children, affecting up to 10 percent of all babies. The tumors pose a significant threat to kids: in about one out of 10 cases, the growths obstruct vital organs. The current treatments of choice include high doses of steroids, and if that doesn't work, interferon -- both disastrous for babies, destroying their immune systems, compromising their neurological development, and triggering other serious side effects such as ulcers, fractures, developmental delays, and severe infections. Surgical removal of the tumors typically causes serious or even fatal bleeding, and since the tumors most often locate in the head and neck areas, they tend to cause deformity whether removed or left intact.
Once again, nature's kitchen has brewed up a far better solution than the labs at the major pharmaceutical companies. Given the risk factors and the side effects of current treatments, the discovery that blueberries may do the trick represents a godsend. Blueberries have no side effects, don't cost much, taste good, and if you care about such things, are aesthetically pleasing compared to a bottle of drugstore pills.
The researchers contend that the findings from this study indicate that blueberries may also alleviate melanoma, as well as cancers of the breast, ovaries, and head and neck. More research is underway, while a host of past studies already show that the berries fight other forms of cancer. And so, the benefits revealed by this study may apply to those of us past diaper age (or those approaching it for the second time) -- as do benefits found by scores of previous studies.
For instance, a 2005 study out of the University of Illinois found that wild blueberries inhibited the initiation and proliferation of bladder and liver cancer cells, mostly due to an extremely powerful antioxidant in the blueberries called anthocyanin. (By the way, a concomitant study at Cornell found that the greatest anti-cancer effect came from consuming foods such as berries in their natural state rather than in taking highly concentrated extracts, because the whole food allows the array of phytochemicals in the foods to work in unison) A 2006 study found that another element in blueberries -- pterostilbene--a compound chemically related to resveratrol -- cut the development of liver cancer lesions in half. And in a 2007 study, pterostilbene reduced pre-cancerous lesions of the colon by 57 percent, while several studies simultaneously found that blueberries help fight prostate cancer.
Still not convinced that it's worth the $4.99 or so to buy a bag of frozen berries? The list of benefits continues on and on. Blueberries have been shown to cleanse the urinary tract and prevent bladder infections, lower cholesterol, promote intestinal health, fight inflammation related to gout and arthritis, reduce nasal congestion, lower cholesterol, and protect against degenerative eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts.
As if these plusses aren't enough, blueberries also offer profound benefits in the arena of cognitive function. Earlier this month, there was a study indicating that blueberries effectively reversed short-term memory loss in rats suffering from dementia. The blueberry-eating rats showed an 83 percent improvement in memory-related tasks, and the positive effects lasted for nine weeks after the rats stopped eating the blueberries. Continuing studies have shown that blueberries protect against, and even reverse, some of the cognitive loss related to stroke, brain injury, degenerative disease, and normal aging. In fact, the extraordinary cognitive benefits of eating blueberries prompted one of the directors of the USDA's Center for Aging, Dr. James Joseph, to comment, "When it comes to brain protection, there is nothing quite like blueberries."
Blueberries outshine almost all contenders in their antioxidant benefit. According to the USDA, blueberry juice has the highest Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC) -- which measures the free-radical destroying ability of foods -- compared to all juices tested. Blueberry juice measures 2906 on the ORAC scale, followed by grapes at 2377 and pomegranates at 2341. Just for comparison, note that orange juice, that favorite of the masses, comes in at 726 and apple juice at 408. Then again, I wouldn't get too hung up on high ORAC values. Other fruit such as wolfberry and jujube actually score much higher on the ORAC scale. But more importantly, despite the fact the USDA and MLM companies push high ORAC values, they mean far less than they seem.
By the way, take note that wild blueberries outshine their domesticated counterparts in antioxidant value. You can usually find organic wild blueberries frozen in the supermarket or health food store.
So, GO OUT AND BUY BLUEBERRIES TODAY! They are the ultimate super food! I eat them just about every day, I buy them fresh but they are just as good frozen.
Hope ya'll are well and having a good week!
Love to all,
Kerri

Is it really May already???
May and August are my favorite months of the year. May is the month Ben and I got married, and August has both of our birthdays along with a ton of our family members birthdays as well. I can't believe we've been married 3 years on May 27th - I guess time really flies when you're having fun! May is when flowers start to really bloom, perfect 80 degree weather starts to stick around and grilling out becomes an every night affair. You just can't beat it. May is also when Mothers Day falls (usually) and we have a lot of Moms in our lives that we are thankful for.
We have some fun things planned for May. This past weekend was a friends bachelorette party, and WOW, what a fabulous time! Mrs. soon to be Allen (Beth Millians) did a great job Sat night, she was a trooper! There were 14 of us in a huge hummer limo. Their wedding is May 23rd - we can't wait!
This weekend is a "cocktail supper" in honor of Jenny Santora and Chris Hagy in Atlanta. Jenny is the sister of my bf from college - Kristie. We are looking forward to spending the weekend with Kristie and her boyfriend, and getting to see Jenny and Chris as well. Fun times!
My Mom is in town all week spending some time with me, and Ben is out of town for work in Savannah until Friday (not fair!) so we are just hanging out and doing a little decorating around my house. Thanks Mom for coming to spend the week with me! :)
I have a prayer request for Ben's grandfather - Papaw. He is currently undergoing open heart surgery for 5 blockages, so please pray for him, and everyone who is in Kentucky helping them right now.
We would like to wish these ladies a HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!
My Mom
Mrs. Linda, my mother-in-law
ReRe, Ben's paternal grandmother
Memaw, Ben's maternal grandmother
Brandy, my sister-in-law
Stephanie, Ben's sister
Aunt Penny, Ben's aunt
Aunt Janet, Ben's aunt
Aunt Sandy, Ben's aunt
Jennifer, Ben's cousin
Seana, Ben's cousin
Hannah, Ben's cousin by marriage
Tracy, my aunt
Laura Herron, great friend of mine
Abbie Ethun, great friend of mine
And everyone else who reads this blog that is a Mom!!!
I thought these pics were hilarious, nothing wrong with a little Mother's Day FUN!
I consider myself a Mom. I have a spoiled rotten kitty that I treat as if she were human - so I'm her mama. Yes, Ben gets me a card from Gracie every year, weird? maybe. Do I think it's the cutest thing in the world? yes. My fam has always done gifts from animals, my parents dogs give Christmas gifts every year. Smart dogs!
WE LOVE YOU ALL VERY MUCH! We hope your day is wonderful!
Love to all,
Kerri
The Dirty Dozen
Hey there,
All is well with me this week. Well, except for an odd skin thing that's going on. I am sure it's nothing to worry about, but it's pretty irritating. I have had "achy" skin on my upper back and arms since Friday. It is worse when I get chill bumps. It sort of feels like I have a sunburn, in a weird way. So, I'm watching it like a hawk - I hear that this can be the start of shingles. BUT, it's on both sides of my body and shingles only starts on one side. I am hoping and praying it's not shingles, because I hear they are like the devil in blister form. Ah, one of the many side effects of chemo. I am sure I will deal with these types of things for a long time. Gotta love it!
Anywho, I came across a few things while reading up on organics recently. After a cancer diagnosis, most people take notice of what they have been eating. Most of it isn't good. I have definitely taken notice. I have begun to buy organic fruit, vegetables and milk when I can. I have also tried to buy organic meats and eggs when possible. Publix has an ok selection, and Fresh Market's fruit is outta this world. It's a little more expensive, but I am thinking that it's worth the money. I thought I would let you all know the dirty dozen when it comes to buying fruit - it's pretty interesting and something I never knew.
12 Most Contaminated Fruits - Buy These Organic
Apples
Bell Peppers
Celery
Cherries
Imported Grapes
Nectarines
Peaches
Pears
Potatoes
Red Raspberries
Spinach
Strawberries
12 Least Contaminated
Asparagus
Avocados
Bananas
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Corn (sweet)
Kiwi
Mangoes
Onions
Papaya
Pineapples
Peas (sweet)
Pretty interesting huh?
I highly suggest buying milk organic, too. The cows that produce organic milk are not given synthetic growth hormones and antibiotics, and they eat food that is pesticide free. It has 70% more Omega 3's, more vitamins, and 3 times more antioxidants than regular milk. It also stays fresh for forever! I think it tastes better too. I think this is especially important for babies and small children. Conventional milk doesn't come close to these standards. So, if you decide to make the switch, don't forget about yogurt too. It's basically all milk, so try Stonyfield Farms Organic Yogurt, its good! Different, but good.
The whole meat thing has started to bother me too. I know how they treat animals that will be used for slaughter. And they aren't the most sanitary of conditions either. BUT, there isn't a lot of places around where you can get organic meat. I've been trying to buy the Greenwise Meat from Publix, but there isn't a lot of selection. I'm too far from Whole Foods at the moment. I currently only buy fish from Fresh Market, it's the only place that doesn't smell like a fishing boat. So, I'm not quite sure what to do about the meat situation. Let me know if you all have any tips!
Now, I don't buy every single thing organic. We don't have money to burn. But, the key here is to buy foods that are organic that would have the heaviest burden of pesticides, additives and growth hormones. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), consumers can reduce their pesticide exposure by 80% by avoiding the most contaminated fruits and vegetables. It's also important to wash everything thoroughly. The things I have been buying organic the most lately are: strawberries, apples, potatoes, spinach, milk, yogurt, and the Greenwise meats. Everything else is just regular. I'd say it's about a $10-$15 difference on my grocery bill every 2 weeks. Not too bad. You can't put a price on your health, anyways.
So, that's my 2 cents for the week.
Hope all of you are well! I can't wait to enjoy the sunshine for the next few days!!
Love to all,
Kerri
I've been DEPORTED!
No, not out of the country... but as of yesterday at noon I am back to my old self again - I had my port removed! HOORAY!
Goodbye old friend, you helped me get through 9 rounds of poison and saved every vein in my arm. You helped me have painless blood draws. You were a good port, always had blood returns and never really made me that uncomfortable. Thank you for helping me with one of my greatest fears - needles. Even though it looked as though I had been abducted by aliens, I wore you with pride. Goodbye port, hello FREEDOM!
Yesterday was frustrating. We were at the hospital at 7:45 am, didn't get into a room until 9:30 then we waited until 11 before I actually went into surgery. Unbelievable! The port removal wasn't the most pleasant of experiences either. It took the nurse twice to find my vein for the IV, of course. I tried to tell her which vein to use, and she went for another one. I am a pro at this by now, and she should have listened to me! And when she did use the vein I told her to, it went right in. Dang, why don't they listen to me? Then, when they began to remove my port - I could feel the tugging and pulling necessary to get it out. I didn't really like that. Then, to top it off, he didn't numb it up enough and I felt the doc stitching me up. OUCH. It isn't as sore as it was when I had it put in, but it's definitely uncomfortable today. I am working from home, because I literally couldn't imagine getting up and attempting to get myself ready this morning with one arm/hand. I can't use my right arm/hand that much because that's the side my port was on. Any movement of the skin on that side of my upper body hurts. I haven't really had the chance to be excited yet because I'm in some pain. But, it does feel good that I'm back to just ME - no foreign objects in my body. YAY!
I am myself again, with 1 biopsy scar, 1 port scar and 4 radiation tattoos. Not bad. Not bad at all.
I checked my horoscope (I'm a Leo) this morning and this is what it said:
Any health concerns you've had should start to fade today. You've done good work.
How fitting is that?
No more doc appointments until June, wow - now that's something to be excited about!
Love to all,
Kerri
First Follow-Up
Hey all,
Just got back from my first follow-up appointment at Dr. H's office, and everything looks good! As expected, there is a lot of scar tissue left over from radiation. I have read that there is just no way around that. More great news - I get to have my port removed! I will be getting it out on Tuesday, April 14th at 8 am. I can't WAIT to get that thing out, I think I will feel completely normal after that. I will be FREEEEEEEEEEE!
My next CT scan will be sometime around the end of June. That one will be extremely important - it will be the first "comparable" scan from this last one. BIG deal. So, if you all could continue to pray for me I would really appreciate it!
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend - 75 and sunny tomorrow in ATL, just can't beat that!
Love to all,
Kerri
